Schools, Not Jails

A California teacher told me that the way impoverished kids are treated in most low-income public schools is criminal. Such schools—with underpaid teachers and books glued to desks so that students cannot take books home to study—have become pipelines to California’s prisons.

As Governor, I would not be closing public schools while building more jails and prisons. I would not be funding 50-year-old prison supervisors with a retirement income equal to 90% of their current salary, while full-time employed teachers earn only a fraction of what prisons supervisors receive at retirement.
